History

Already at the beginning of the 20th century began the rivalry between the European and South American football clubs. The competition between the best team of the two confederations was an idea of the UEFA general secretary Henri Delaunay. Because of his insistence CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores called 1960 a South African competition modeled after the European Cup UEFA to life. The two " continental champions " should be measured together now. On 3 July 1960, the first World Cup match between Real Madrid and Club Atlético Peñarol was held in Montevideo. The game ended 0-0. The return leg in Madrid Real won 5-1, so that the first World Cup went to Europe. In subsequent years, the Cup was still played in home and away matches. It came after the two games is a tie after wins, found a third game rather than decision-making. The amount of the respective seal was irrelevant.

So it was, for example, in 1961 a third match between Benfica and CA Peñarol, although Peñarol won his match 5-0 and Benfica his game only 1-0. The third game was first held there in the same stadium as the second game, until in 1967 a neutral venue selected. Finally, the away goals rule was introduced in 1968.

The games were conducted in part with extreme hardness and great duel, so that they fell in the 1970s in the criticism. 1971 renounced Ajax Amsterdam on participation, as in the previous year some good players had suffered serious injuries. Even later European champion followed the example of Ajax and were rather take the runners-up. In the period 1971-1979, this was a total of five times the case, but only Atlético Madrid could win in 1974 as a finalist for the title. 1973 called for the European Football Union UEFA unsuccessful, the prohibition of the World Cup.

In 1981 the World Cup was fundamentally reformed. The Japanese car company Toyota took over the financing and was the competition 's official name Toyota Cup. Since then, there was only one more game in Tokyo (or 2002 to 2004 in Yokohama ), which took place just before Christmas. At the same time alongside the existing trophy and another trophy of the sponsor ( Toyota Cup ) has been assigned. This year, even though there were two games: For the winner of 1980 in February and the second for the winner of the 1981 mid-December.
