The Interstate 78 (abbreviated I-78 ) is a part of the interstate highway system in the United States. It runs from Union Township in Pennsylvania, northeast of Harrisburg, to Canal Street in downtown Manhattan, New York City.

Course

Pennsylvania

I-78 begins at the intersection with Interstate 81 near Lebanon. From there it runs east toward Allentown. On the eastern edge of the Lebanon County it unites with U.S. Highway 22, which leaves them as Lehigh Valley Thruway at Exit 51 in Allentown again. Here crosses the I-78 and Interstate 476 which is also called the Pennsylvania Turnpike and thus is not included. East of Bethlehem crosses the I- 78 on the Interstate 78 Toll Bridge the Delaware River and thus the border into New Jersey.

New Jersey

In New Jersey, the profile of I -78 for 66 miles as the Phillipsburg - Newark Expressway or Newark Bay Extension to the border with the state of New York at the entrance to the Holland Tunnel in Jersey City. In the town of Phillipsburg she joins again with U.S. Highway 22, this time for 15 miles to Exit 18 in the City of Annandale.

New York

In New York State, I-78 is just a little over a mile long. It crosses the Holland Tunnel under the Hudson River from Jersey City Coming and ends right at the tunnel exit. Planning the I-78 north and east through New York to lead City to obtain a connection to Interstate 278 in Brooklyn over the never realized Lower Manhattan Expressway, were discarded.
