Irish Professional Championship

The Irish Professional Championship was a snooker tournament to determine the national snooker champion of Ireland ( Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland).

History

The tournament has a longer tradition than most other national snooker championships, it was fought from 1947 to 1982 on the basis of challenge duels. From 1973 to 1979 there was no discharge. The Northern Irishman Jackie Rea was until 1972 with the exception of a year always successful before Alex Higgins broke his supremacy. Starting in 1982, the format was changed to a co- tournament.

From 1985, the competition was financially supported by the World Association WPBSA. In the other leading Snooker Nations (England, Scotland, Wales, Canada, Australia and South Africa) corresponding championships between 1984 /85 and 1988/89 were funded by the World Association (see the See Also section ). Were eligible to participate only player in the country, so there were no points for the Snooker world rankings.

After the end of this financing, the tournament was set initially. 1992 and 1993 and between 2005 and 2007, it was again revived.
