James Abdnor

James Abdnor ( born February 13, 1923 in Kennebec, Lyman County, South Dakota; † 16, 2012 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota ) was an American politician and member of the Republican Party.

Life

From 1942 to 1943 Abdnor served in the United States Army. He then studied at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. After he was a member of the Senate of South Dakota from 1956 to 1968, he was 1969-1970 Vice governor of the state.

From 1972 Abdnor for the Republicans in the 93rd and the following three conventions has been selected. He was thus dated January 3, 1973 to January 3, 1981 Member of the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1980, he decided not to run for re-election, but for election to the U.S. Senate, where he served after his victory over the Democratic incumbent George McGovern of 3 January 1981 to 3 January 1987. He had to leave the Senate after losing to Democrat Tom Daschle. Immediately thereafter, he was appointed head of the Small Business Administration, which he remained until 1989.

Abdnor last lived in his home town of Kennebec.
