Kawagoe, Saitama

Kawagoe (Japanese川 越 市, - shi) is a Japanese city in Saitama Prefecture located about 30 minutes by train from Tokyo.

History

Kawagoe, in the Edo period princely seat of the fief of the same name, was after the abolition of feudal 1871 first administrative seat of the short-lived Iruma Prefecture, which included the southwest of the later Saitama.

1879, the joint administration of the county (later merged ) counties Iruma and coma was established in Kawagoe. With the introduction of modern municipal orders in 1889 was Kawagoe district town ( machi ) in a circle Iruma.

Kawagoe was appointed on 1 December 1922 with Shi.

Attractions

Kawagoe is also known as the Klein- Edo or Koedo (小 江 戸) known under the old name for Tokyo. Major attractions include the Bell Tower and the Temple Tokinokane Kita- in.

Kawagoe castle

The castle Kawagoe (川 越 城, Kawagoe - jo ) was in 1457 by Oda Doshin and his famous son Dokan built by order of Uesugi Mochitomo. Approximately at the same time, the original structure of Edo Castle was built.

When Tokugawa Ieyasu conquered the Kanto region in 1590, the fief of Kawagoe -han was founded. Kawagoe was extended to military base for the defense of Edo and was at the same time as the economic basis for the transport of food and other goods to Edo.

The castle was inhabited again of historically significant personalities. Today, almost the entire castle area is used as a park or residential area. The residence of the lords of the castle, which accounted for only a small part of the castle is still preserved in its original form to this day.

The residence is named Honmaru Goths. It was built in 1848 and has a total area of 545 m². One of the rooms has been designed with 123 tatami mats and turned into a museum. Archaeological relics and images from the culture heritage are exhibited there.

Kawagoe is known for some mostly Süßkartoffelprodukte, including a Süßkartoffelbier, which is brewed in the local brewery.
