László Szalma

László Szalma ( born October 27, 1957 in Nagymaros, Pest County ) is a former Hungarian long jumper. From 1976 to 1990 he was thirteen times in the finals at European Indoor Championships, reached ten times the final battle of the best eight Springer and won six medals.

Career

At the 1976 European Indoor Championships in Munich, took the 18 -year-old Szalma with 7.36 m in tenth place. His first medal he won at the European Indoor Championships 1977 in San Sebastián. With 7.78 m, it was second only to the two Germans, Hans Baumgartner ( West) and Lutz Franke (East). A year later at the European Indoor Championships in Milan he won with 7.83 m in front of the Belgian Ronald Desruelles. The European Athletics Championships 1978 in Prague, he retired with 7.53 m from the qualification.

In 1980 at the European Indoor Championships in Sindelfingen Szalma jumped 7.55 meters and finished tenth. In the long jump final at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, the jumpers from the U.S. were missing because of the Olympic boycott. Nevertheless, a high-class competition with eight jumpers beyond the eight- meter mark developed. It won Lutz Dombrowski before his East German compatriot Frank Paschek, Laslo Szalma missing after 8.13 m than five centimeters 's Fourth bronze medal Valeri Podluschnis.

1981 at the European Indoor Championships in Grenoble Szalma was also fourth in Moscow and how he missed by five centimeters to 7.90 m bronze medal. In the outdoor season, he won the title at the Universiade. At the European Indoor Championships in Milan in 1982 Szalma was 7.78 m Fifth, he was placed two inches behind silver and bronze. When playing at home in Budapest, he won with 7.95 m in front of his compatriot Gyula Pálóczi.

At the first World Athletics Championships 1983 in Helsinki Szalma met for the first time at international championships on the best Americans. Szalma covered with 8.12 m in fourth place behind the three Americans Carl Lewis, Jason Grimes and Mike Conley, Conley which won the bronze medal only because of the better second-best jump.

1985 were held as a precursor to the World Indoor Championships in Paris -Bercy, the World Indoor Games. Although the final was dominated by European jumpers, Szalma covered with 7.85 m only fourth place. At the European Indoor Championships in Piraeus Szalma missed with the same width as the winner better placement by the poorer second best jump. With 8.15 meters, he finished second behind Pálóczi, who had become in Bercy second behind January Leitner; in Piraeus Leitner was fourth. In the summer of 1985 Szalma jumped his last Hungarian long jump record of 8.30 m. At the European Indoor Championships 1986 in Madrid Szalma jumped 8.24 meters and won silver behind the starting of the Soviet Union Armenians Robert Emmijan.

Jumped in 1987 at the European Indoor Championships in Liévin Szalma 8.07 m and finished fourth. Fourteen days later he was at the World Indoor Championships in Indianapolis in sixth with 7.87 m. At the European Indoor Championships in 1988 in Budapest Szalma covered with 8.03 m second behind the Dutch Frans Maas. At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul jumped six jumpers on the eight- meter mark, Szalma was exactly 8.00 m sixth. At the European Indoor Championships in 1989 in The Hague, the Netherlands Emiel Mellaard won before the Spaniard Antonio Corgos and Frans Maas. Szalma was fourth with 8.06 meters. At the World Indoor Championships in 1989 in Budapest won Larry Myricks (USA) before the German Dietmar Haaf. Szalma missed the bronze medal with 8.10 meters by one centimeter against Mike Conley. At the European Indoor Championships in 1990 in Glasgow Szalma was Fifteenth 7.56 m. Szama ended his great career after 34th in qualifying at the Olympic Games in 1992.

Szalma was Hungarian national champion in 1978, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1985 and 1988, in the hall, he won the championship title from 1977 to 1984 from 1986 until 1990. He presented from 1977 to 1985 eight Hungarian national records in the long jump. His last record was still stock ( as of 2007). At a height of 1.91 m Szalma had a competition weight of 78 kg.
