Liberty Global plc. based in London, is an international media company and one of the largest broadband providers outside the United States.

History

The Company has emerged from a fusion of Liberty Media International and UGC ( UnitedGlobalCom ). These are now 100 percent Daughters of Liberty Global. Claims to the Group at the end March 2013 nearly 25 million customers in 14 countries had. LMI - CEO John C. Malone serves as Chairman, UGC CEO Michael Fries as President and Chief Executive Officer ( CEO).

Malone is also the CEO of the " Discovery Holding Company ," which the Discovery Channel operates through its subsidiary group Discovery Communications among others.

Since late 2007, Liberty Global powered by the broken tele cable also bought UPC Austria.

On 24 October 2005, Liberty Global Switzerland acquired all shares of " Cablecom Holdings AG ", the indirect parent company of the Swiss cable operator Cablecom for around 2.8 billion Swiss francs. The company operates under the name UPC Cablecom since 2007 part of the Dutch UPC Broadband Holding and since the end of March 2011.

Even in the largest Belgian cable operator Telenet keeps Liberty Global, with over 57.67 % majority shareholding.

On 13 November 2009, Liberty Global announced the acquisition of German cable operator Unity Media for 3.5 billion euros. The purchase was completed on 28 January 2010, after the approval by the Federal Cartel Office. In March 2011, the purchase of KabelBW for 3.2 billion euros, which was finally completed by the green light of the competition authorities in December 2011 was performed.
