Micron Technology

Micron Technology, Inc. is a technology company headquartered in Boise (Idaho, USA). Micron mainly manufactures memory elements for computers and CMOS image sensors. In the field of CMOS image sensors, the company is the global market leader (2006). From Micron Imaging 2008 Aptina Imaging has emerged in the year. Micron Technology is listed on the NYSE in the MU index and has about 26,000 employees. In fiscal year 2011 net sales of 8.8 billion U.S. $ was achieved.

Micron has production sites in the U.S., Italy, Singapore and Japan. Today Micron is the only DRAM manufacturer in the United States.

The direct sales to end customers is handled since 1996 under the name Crucial Technology.

History

Micron was founded in 1978 in Boise, Idaho by Ward Parkinson, Joe Parkinson, Dennis Wilson, and Doug Pitman. The startup was financed by local investors Tom Nicholson, Allen Noble, and Ron Yanke. The further expansion was financed by John Simplot.

In 1981, Micron first DRAM chips with a capacity of 64 kbit ago. Through a consistent cost control Micron survived several burglaries of the DRAM market, major competitors forced to exit the market. Even Intel, the inventor of DRAM was in 1985 forced to move away from this business.

1998 micron acquired memory production by Texas Instruments in 2001 and those from Toshiba.

1994 different co-founder Joe Parkinson as CEO, and Steve Appleton took over the management of the company until his accidental death on February 3, 2012. Interim successor is Mark Durcan.

In the early 1990s, the subsidiary Micron computer (today: Micron Electronics ) was founded as a manufacturer of personal computers. In 1999, came up with " Micron Internet Services" another subsidiary for bundling of Internet activities added. Both divisions were sold in 2001 at web.com or MPC.
