Mont-Saint-Martin (Meurthe-et-Moselle)

Mont -Saint -Martin ( Luxembourgish: Mäertesbierg ) is a commune with 8026 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Meurthe -et -Moselle in the Lorraine region. It belongs to the district Briey and chef lieu ( chief town ) of the Canton of Mont -Saint -Martin.

Geography

Mont -Saint -Martin is the northernmost municipality in the department of Meurthe -et -Moselle. It is located on the triangle of Luxembourg, Belgium and France at an altitude 160-298 m above sea level. The municipality covers 8.84 km ².

At Mont -Saint -Martin belongs to the district of Piedmont.

Neighboring municipalities are Aubange (Belgium ) in the west and north, Pétange ( Luxembourg ) to the east, in the southeast Longlaville, Longwy in the south and Cosnes -et -Romain in the southwest.

History

The earliest traces of settlement can be traced back to the third century. The town was at the junction of Roman roads that connected the camp of Titelberg and Virton together. Since the sixth century there was a church in the village. From 1793 to 1973, the village belonged to the canton of Longwy.

Demographics

The population growth has been demonstrated since the end of the 18th century. 1793 lived in Mont -Saint -Martin, only 230 inhabitants. In 1872 the population exceeded the first threshold of 1,000 inhabitants. By 1896 there were over 2,400 residents in the town. The population increased to over 6,100 inhabitants in 1931, to then fall to below 4300 to 1946. The highest ever reached population was 11,556 in 1975.
