Montecastrilli

Montecastrilli is a municipality with 5187 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the Province of Terni in the Umbria region of Italy.

Geography

The municipality covers 62 km ². It is located about 50 km south of Perugia and about 15 km northwest of Terni.

The districts include Casteltodino, Farnetta, Colle Secco, Castel dell'Aquila and Quadrelli.

The neighboring municipalities are Acqua Sparta, Amelia, Avigliano, Guardea, Narni, Terni and San Gemini.

History

According to legend, the place name derives from the Latin word Castra ( camp ) and was at the time, pulled as Hannibal in the Second Punic War to Rome. After the fall of the Roman Empire ruled in the first place, the Lombards, the Byzantines, who turned the place into a fortress to protect their way to Ravenna and Rome. In the Middle Ages the town was part of the Terre Arnolfe the Signoria degli Arnolfi (approx. modern province of Terni) to 1093, when the Papal States took control over Montecastrilli.
