Giove, Umbria

Giove is a municipality with 1890 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the Province of Terni in the Umbria region of Italy. The place belongs to the most beautiful villages in Italy (I più belli d' Italia borghi ).

Geography

The municipality covers 15 km ². It is located about 90 km south of Perugia and about 40 km west of Terni in the lower Tiber valley in the climatic classification of Italian communities in the zone D, 1896 GR / G.

The only district is Palombina (290 meters altitude, about 50 inhabitants).

The neighboring municipalities are Amelia, Attigliano, Bassano in Teverina (VT), Bomarzo (VT), places (VT) and Penna in Teverina.

History

The name derives from the town is the built in honor of the Temple of Zeus from the past of the Etruscans and Umbrians. The present town was first mentioned in 1191 under the name Juvo writing in a document of the local lords Berardo di Pietro and the Earl of Alviano. On January 2, 1223 assumed the local lords of the families Amatore, Oderini, Ugolino and Veritiero the reign of Orvieto. 1481 will be the place of Pope Sixtus IV as a fiefdom Lucrezia d' Aragona APPIANI, widow of Pino degli Oderlaffi be subject. On October 10, 1643 Pope Urban VIII gave the Marquis Girolamo Mattei, son of Asdrubale, the earldom. The county remained in the possession of the Mattei until 1796, when Napoleon's troops occupied Umbria. After the defeat of which the place got back to the Mattei under the control of the Papal States until 1854, when the place was part of the province of Umbria. Six years later, Giove part of the Kingdom of Italy. 1909, leaving the Mattei the castle Pietro Ricciardi, who ten years later sold his part the property to the Count De Chenaz de Robilant.
