Montecchio

Montecchio is a municipality with 1702 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the Province of Terni in the Umbria region of Italy.

Geography

The municipality extends over some 49 km ². It is located about 50 km south of Perugia and about 35 km northwest of Terni in the climatic classification of Italian communities in the zone D, 2051 GG.

Among the districts ( frazioni ) include Melezzole, Prato Giardino, San Rocco and Tenaglie.

The neighboring municipalities are Avigliano, Bashi, Civitella d' Agliano (VT), Guardea, Orvieto and Todi (PG).

History

The first mention of Montecchio 1275 when the town already had a city wall. The name derives from the Latin Mons Herculis ( Hercules Mountain ), which later Munticulus and then Montecchio was. In the 10th and 11th century still under the rule of Todi, from 12 then below that of Bashi. 1165 was the castle of Castro Monticoli, which was built by the family of Chiaravalle. In the 13th century it fell into the struggles of the Guelphs and Ghibellines, then the second ring of walls of the fortification was built.

  • Chiesa di San Biagio, dating back to about 1112 Church in the district of Melezzole. Was restored in 1624.
  • Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista, 1370 church built in the district Tenaglie.
  • Chiesa di San Vitale, Church of the 12th century in the village of Melezzole.
  • Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta. The church was erected in 1400 or 1437 and repeatedly adapted; as the existing tower was built in 1633. The church represents the highest point of the municipality
