Alviano

Alviano is a municipality in the province of Terni with 1501 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the Italian region of Umbria.

Geography

Alviano is in the southern part of Umbria, on the border with the province of Viterbo, Lazio in the climatic classification of Italian communities in the zone D, 1822 GG .. The place is located on the right side of the Tiber valley, halfway between Orvieto and Narni, in a rugged, characterized by erosion hills. In the town is the 1964 created on behalf of ENEL Tiber Lago di Alviano. The lake is the center of a nature reserve established in 1978 ( Oasi d' Alviano ), which comprises 900 acres and is home to many bird species.

History

The first fortified medieval settlement dates back to the year 933 and was mentioned under the name " Albianum ". The fort was destroyed by the troops of Orvieto and Todi. In the 15th century the place was a fief of the d' Alviano family. Their most famous member was the Condottiere Bartolomeo d' Alviano, the Castello rebuilt in the Renaissance style, and from the place made ​​the center of a small state. After the extinction of Alviano family, the feud came to several owners, and was acquired in 1654 by Olimpia Maidalchini, wife of Pamfilo Pamphili, a brother of Pope Innocent X, .

Culture and sights

  • The medieval-themed place is dominated by the Castello Doria Pamphili from the 15th century. The castle has a square base with four round towers. The chapel of the castle is furnished with frescoes, among others, Giuseppe Bastiani (17th century). Today the building serves as the town hall and has a museum with a permanent exhibition on the agricultural traditions of the area and about the life of Bartolomeo d' Alviano.
