Porano

Porano is a municipality with 2008 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the Province of Terni in the Umbria region of Italy.

Geography

The municipality covers 14 km ². It is located about 50 km southwest of Perugia and about 45 km northwest of Terni. The place is part of the Comunità montana Monte Selva di Meana Peglia e and has no other districts.

The neighboring municipalities are Lubriano (VT) and Orvieto.

History

The tombs of the Etruscans in the municipality ( about 2 km north between Orvieto and Porano ) indicate an Etruscan site, but only in the 12th century the capital was built on the hill. The castrum (castle ) was first documented in the 14th century, when the family of orvieter Avveduti the place as a fiefdom led. In the early 15th century Ladislao Anjou conquered the place that then remained with the nearby Castel Rubello under the rule of Orvieto. At the end of the 16th century, the town was incorporated into the Papal States. There, the place remained until 1860, when Umbria was in the wake of the Risorgimento region of Italy. In 1927, the town was divided into the newly founded province of Terni.

Attractions

  • Castel Rubello, castle of the 12th century.
  • Chiesa di San Biagio, documented already in the 13th century church. Includes a stoup of Rutilio Laurenzi from the year 1608.
  • Tomba degli Hescana, Etruscan tomb with murals. Named after the Etruscan family of Hescana. The tombs Golini I and II also belong to the complex, but were named after their discoverer. The paintings of these graves were transferred to the Museo di Orvieto archeologico.
