Montgomery Wilson

William Stewart Montgomery " Bud " Wilson ( born August 20, 1909 in Toronto, Ontario, † November 15, 1964 in Lincoln, Massachusetts) was a Canadian figure skater and figure skating coach.

Life

In the period from 1929 to 1939 he won nine national titles in men's singles and five in pair skating with his sister Constance Wilson. He holds the record for most victories at the Canadian Figure Skating Championships. On the international stage in 1932 his most successful year. He became Vice World Champion behind Karl Schäfer and won the bronze medal at the Winter Olympics. In both tournaments, he started in the pairs figure skating competition with his sister and finished sixth at the World Championships and fifth at the Olympic Winter Games. Wilson focused on the Olympic year and took only rarely in tournaments. In 1936, he came back after four years of international break, reaching again a fifth place finish at the World Figure Skating Championships and a fourth place at the Winter Olympics.

Wilson was the first Canadian to win a medal at the World Championships and Olympic Games in the men's singles. He established a long tradition of figure skating in Canada.

After his active sports career, he worked for several years as coach of the Boston Skating Club. He died in 1964 at 55 years.
