Elvis Stojko

Elvis Stojko ( born March 22, 1972 in Newmarket, Ontario) is a former Canadian figure skater, who started in a single run. He is the world champion in 1994, 1995 and 1997 and the Four Continents champion of 2000.

Career

Stojkos parents emigrated to Canada in the 1950s. His father came from Slovenia and went to Canada in 1955. His Hungarian-born mother, Irene fled Hungary in 1956 after the invasion of Warsaw Pact troops. Elvis Stojko was born in Newmarket, Ontario and grew up in Richmond Hill, Ontario. His parents named him after Elvis Presley. He began with four years at the ice skating and won his first competition at the age of six years. As a child he also ran Karate and took it at the age of 16 years to black belt.

At the Olympic Winter Games in 1994 and 1998 respectively Stojko won the silver medal. 1994, 1995 and 1997, he was world champion, also seven times Canadian champion. In 1995, he was forced to withdraw due to an ankle injury at the Canadian championships, but was still set by the Canadian Association for the World Championships. This world championships he won with one of the best performances of his career despite not yet healed injury.

At the Olympic Winter Games 1998, he was also injured. He suffered a groin injury and also had a cold. Strong painkillers he was not allowed to play because of the doping regulations. The media were not informed about injury and disease. To medals Elvis Stojko appeared in sneakers, as the skating was too painful.

At the 1991 World Championships Elvis Stojko was the first to figure skaters in the world, a jump combination with a quad and a double jump. 1997, also at the World Cup, he was the first to a quadruple - triple combination. 2002 Stojko was professional. On August 10, 2006, he announced his retirement from figure skating.

Stojko wrote about his career, a book entitled " Heart and Soul". He is also involved with the Ronald McDonald Children's Charities in Canada. In the Simpsons episode Kill Gil: Vols. 1 & 2 from the 18th Season Stojko has a guest appearance.

After the Lord competition of the Olympic Games in Vancouver in 2010, when Evan Lysacek before Yevgeny Plyushchenko won gold to Stojko took the side of Plyushchenko and criticized the scoring system, as it would not rate quadruple jumps high enough, and thus the figure skating would take a development that it would be the high performance sport in which it would in particular technical elements, especially jumps, devalue.

On June 20, 2010 Stojko married in Las Vegas, the Mexican figure skater Gladys Orozco.
