Montjuïc circuit

The Circuit de Montjuïc ( Spanish Circuito de Montjuic ) is a former motor racing track in the Parc de Montjuïc in Barcelona, where the Olympic Games were held in 1992. He is regarded as one of the toughest Formula 1 courses of all time.

History

From 1908 to the international motor sports at the Circuit Baix Penedès with the Copa Catalunya was home. In 1923, the first Spanish Grand Prix was held at the race track Sitges Terramar circuit near Barcelona. 1932 was a race on a road course, starting in Montjuïc Park, wooded parkland on a hill above the harbor of Barcelona, ​​discharged. The course of the eastern course of this race of 1933 was the real Circuito de Montjuïc.

From 1951 to 1969, the Circuit de Montjuïc hosted the Spanish Grand Prix for motorcycles in the Motorcycle World Championship. 1969 Spanish Grand Prix was held the Formula 1 World Championship on this route for the first time, although it took place already in the 1950s at the Circuito de Pedralbes in Barcelona, ​​at the resumption but was held last year at the Circuito del Jarama. The two routes alternated from then on. In 1975, the Grand Prix was overshadowed by an almost pre-programmed tragedy. Many of the drivers were steering for unsafe and wanted to strike, but only the two -time world champion Emerson Fittipaldi withdrew its start back in protest. The Militia of the Franco regime threatened to confiscate the cars in the Olympic Stadium, which served as paddock. In the 26th round came four spectators and marshals killed when the car by Rolf Stommelen lost his rear wing and was catapulted over the guardrail. On 13 July 1985, the Formula TT World Cup was a guest. Winner in the F1 class was Joey Dunlop on Honda and in the F2 class Brian Reid on Yamaha.

On the Circuito de Montjuïc were also the 24 Hours of Montjuic, a motorcycle endurance race, held. Since 1991, the Spanish Grand Prix will be held at the Circuit de Catalunya just outside of Barcelona.
