Moyeuvre-Grande

Moyeuvre -Grande ( German: Groß- Moyeuvre or Großmövern ) is a commune with 7969 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Moselle in the Lorraine region. It belongs to the district of Thionville -Ouest and is capital of the canton Moyeuvre -Grande.

Geography

The community Moyeuvre -Grande is located on the Orne River, a tributary of the Moselle River, 15 kilometers southwest of Thionville. The municipality is bordered to the west by the department of Meurthe -et -Moselle.

History

The place was first mentioned in 871 under the name Modover and is located in the Lorraine Erzgebiet. Ore mining and related forging have been operated since the Middle Ages.

Although it has always been the place is located on the French side of the historic German - French language border it was launched in 1871 by the Peace of Frankfurt to the German Reich, as Germany insisted on the cession of the eastern half of the Lorraine Erzgebietes. Many inhabitants emigrated then to France, but at the same time began with the onset of industrialization economic rise of the region. 1871-1915 was the place the official German name is case- Moyeuvre, 1915-18 then Germanized in Großmövern. 1918, the city fell under the Treaty of Versailles restored to France.

1940-44 the place under the name Mövern was again under German control, because of its status as an industrial location but escaped most of the inhabitants of the expulsion of the French-speaking Lorraine, which was conducted in autumn 1940 by the German civil administration.
