Munxar

Munxar (or Il- Munxar ) is a village on the south coast of the island of Gozo Malta. It is located near the village of Sannat, has its own council and 1106 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2010). The municipal area of Munxar belongs also the place Xlendi.

The name Munxar in German means " saw" and the teeth of this saw are clearly visible also in the coat of arms of the village.

One of the most famous sons of the village was Professor Joseph Aquilina, who was born on April 7, 1911 in Munxar. He first earned the title of "Bachelor of Arts" and then became a lawyer at the University of Malta. From 1937 to 1940 he taught comparative Semitic philology at the University of London where he also made his doctor. During his tenure at the University of Malta, he also released a Maltese -English dictionary.
