Música popular brasileira

Música Popular Brasileira ( MPB short ) is called today the pop music from Brazil, where " pop" may actually be "popular" equated with. The connection to the traditional Brazilian music is an important defining characteristic, although foreign styles such as rock or reggae be integrated into different streams. MPB is for the Brazilians " nossa música ", " our music ", and closely linked to the cultural and national identity. Música Popular Brasileira is heard across all ages and social strata.

To notice is also that in Brazil the usual in Western cultures separation between entertainment and serious music ( Música Brasileira erudita ) is not quite as pronounced.

The concept of " Música Popular Brasileira " came up in the 1960s, shortly after the Bossa Nova was created which combined a rather intellectual, student- influenced musician and listener scene.

Today the Música Popular Brasileira is immensely rich in styles and the concept is being extended continuously by record established artists of the MPB new, regionally known influences and styles in their repertoire and make them brazil and partly also known worldwide.

In contrast to the musical styles only nationally known artists of the Música Popular Brasileira are marketed worldwide by major international music labels. But this is changing as part of the so-called "world music " wave: Self regional styles such as forró find now also in Europe and North America an audience.
