Geography

Geographical location

The community Nordrach stretches over some ten kilometers in length in the narrow valley of the river of the same name along. In this valley the road to Zell am Harmersbach runs (6 km ) to Bad Peterstal (12 km), but the route through the Harmersbachtal over the Löcherberg is shorter. The distance to the city of Offenburg is 28 km. The municipality lies at altitudes of 255 m above sea level. Sea level up to 878 m above sea level. NN.

Neighboring communities

The municipality is bordered to the north by the cities of Oberkirch and Oppenau, to the east by Oberharmersbach, in the south to the city of Gengenbach and to the west by the city of Gengenbach.

Community structure

The settlement focus is in the village Nordrach, six kilometers from Zell am Harmersbach. A small hamlet situated six kilometers further, The Colony, formerly called Nordrach factory. History

Nordrach formerly belonged to the district Wolfach, with its dissolution came the place in 1973 Ortenaukreis. Nordrach had four tuberculosis clinics until 1975. Particularly noteworthy was the people sanatorium in Nordrach Colony, which was founded by the Socialists and Dr. Otto Walther and his wife, Dr. Hope Adams. It was the first woman who obtained a license to practice as a doctor in the Empire. Until their divorce, the two jointly initiated the People's Treatment Centre, in addition to poor populations including Clara Zetkin and August Bebel were accepted as patients. In addition, there was the Orthodox Jewish Rothschild hospital in the village with a kosher kitchen and a synagogue; a small Jewish cemetery still exists. This clinic in 1942 was converted by the Nazis into the Lebensborn home Black Forest, most of the Jewish doctors, nurses and patients were deported and murdered in Theresienstadt and Auschwitz.

Religions

Because of Nordrach passed the Reformation, the church is dominated Roman Catholic today. The Catholic church in the village is dedicated to Saint Ulrich. The few evangelical believers are served by Gengenbach from.

Nordrach has entered into a partnership with the community Niedernai in Alsace in France in 2000.

Economy and infrastructure

Traditionally, the Nordrach lived by agriculture and forestry. Due to the steep slopes and the associated risk of erosion, however, the cultivation of the fields was difficult and hardly mechanized. This led after the Second World War quickly to a drastic decline in agriculture. 2003 there were 15 commercial farms and about 60 part-time farmers.

In 2011, there were about 850 in Nordrach jobs, 57 percent of them in manufacturing. The commuter balance is positive, 390 Nordrach earn their living outside the municipality and 530 workers come from other communities to Nordrach.

Traffic

The community is a bus with cell A.h. connected and belongs to the Tarifverbund Ortenau.

Kurbetrieb

The suitability of the Nordrachtals for curative purposes was recognized in the late 19th century. The wind-protected and fog-free situation favored the construction of several sanatoriums, but all of them have disappeared. For this reason Nordrach was referred to as " Badisches Davos ". In Nordrach there are two rehabilitation clinics.

Woodworking

The timber also has a long tradition in Nordrachtal. It can be found in Nordrach five sawmills and a number of processing companies.
