Geography

Geographical location

Ortenberg is located in the foothills of the Black Forest at the output of the Kinzig valley in the Rhine valley, 5 km from the district town of Offenburg. The Baden wine road passes through Ortenberg.

Neighboring communities

The community is surrounded on three sides by the city of Offenburg and is bordered to the east by Ohlsbach.

Community structure

The municipality includes the village of Ortenberg Ortenberg, the hamlet Frösch Lach, Käferberg (both grown together with Ortenberg ) and stone pit and the living spaces Bachgraben and lock. In Ortenberg risen is the town of Freudenthal.

History

The village was first mentioned in 1148, at that time it had the name Dottenwiler / Tatenwilre. It was not until the mid-14th century, the name of the castle, which was already in 1233 called castrum Ortinberg, also used for the village. The castle was destroyed in 1678. Leonhard von Berckholtz she built in the 19th century again.

In Ortenberg 1573-1630 witch trials were carried out. 19 women came in witch trials and were executed.

Ortenberg long time belonged to the district of Offenburg, when it was dissolved in 1973, the place came to the newly formed Ortenaukreis.

Ortenberg maintains partnership relations with Stotz home in Alsace since 1965 and Ortenberg (Hessen) since 1976.

Attractions

Ortenberg Castle serves as a youth hostel, but the tower systems are publicly available. Today's castle-like building was built 1838-1843 by the Livonian Kaufmann Gabriel Leonhard von Berckholtz by the architect Friedrich Eisenlohr at the site of the castle Ortenberg, which had been destroyed in 1678. Contrary to popular belief, this former imperial castle was just the place its name, but not the Ortenau. This name is derived from the previous term Mortenau (from Latin Moridunum = Wetlands ), the initial consonant of the vernacular fell victim from the late 16th century.

The Bühlwegkapelle was built in 1497 and is used ecumenically since 1972.

The St. Bartholomew the Apostle parish church was built in 1824 by architect Hans Voss in Weinbrenner style. The altarpiece in the Nazarene style date from the painter Marie Ellenrieder.

Economy and infrastructure

Ortenberg is a wine-growing village, whose documents are Ortenau wine region in the wine region of Baden.

Traffic

Although Ortenberg located on the Black Forest Railway, which runs from Offenburg to Singen ( Hohentwiel ), the railway station of the municipality is, however, closed down since the 1980s. The Ortenau S -Bahn is currently planning a restart of the breakpoint.

Education

With the off- Berckholtz - school there is a primary and secondary school in Ortenberg. For the youngest population, there is a kindergarten.
