North Bačka District

The Okrug Severna Bačka ( Serbian округ Северно - Бачки or Severno - Backi okrug, Hungarian Észak - Bácskai körzet, Croatian Sjevernobački okrug, Slovak Severobáčsky okres, Romanian Districtul Bačka de Nord ) or Northern Bačka District is a district in the northern part of Serbian Vojvodina. The headquarters is located in Subotica.

Communities

The circuit consists of three municipalities (Serbian: Opština ).

Population

In the 2002 census (self- nomination) 200 140 inhabitants were counted in this district.

The ethnic distribution in the district is very mixed: Magyars ( 87 181 or 43.5 %), Serbs ( 49,637 or 24.8 %), Bunjewatzen, Croats, Yugoslavs and others.

The languages ​​most commonly used are 48% Serbian and Hungarian with 44%.

Two of the municipalities have a Magyar majority: Bačka Topola ( 59%) and Mali Iđoš (56 %), with Subotica is quite balanced: Magyars ( 38.5 %), Serbs ( 24.1 %), Bunjewatzen ( 11%), Croats (11%), Yugoslavs (6%), Roma ( 2%), Montenegrins (1% ) and others.

Of the remaining 20 villages have a Magyar, 15, a Serb, one of the seven Bunjewatzen, a Montenegrin and two a mixed ethnic majority.

Religions and churches

Subotica is a multiethnic and multi- religious center, the majority Serb- Orthodox or Roman Catholic, but there are also other religious communities in the city.

Among the churches are the Cathedral of St. Theresa (1797 ), the Franciscan Monastery (1723 ), the Orthodox Church from the 18th century, the Synagogue and the Orthodox Church in Aleksandrovo, both from the 17th century, worth mentioning.

Economy

In the region, the food industry has a strong presence, for example in the areas of meat (29 novembar ), confectionery ( Pionir ) and bread and flour ( Fidel Inca ). Subotica is one of the cities in Serbia with the highest maize, wheat and sunflower paragraph.
