Peynier
Peynier is a commune with 2966 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Bouches -du -Rhône in the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.
Geography
The community is located 22 kilometers south-east of Aix -en- Provence. Neighboring municipalities are Trets, Rousset and Fuveau. The municipality is part of the Communauté d' agglomération du Pays d' Aix.
History
Even in ancient times there was a settlement here as discoveries prove. The name derives from Puium Neroni (1008 ) and panel from nigrum. In the 13th century the place was called, or the fortress Castrum de Puei - nier. It means as much as Black Mountain. In the late Middle Ages, the Count and the abbots of Marseille were the men of the village. Later the village was ravaged by religious wars and was affected by severe frost in winter 1709.
