Trets
Trets is a commune with 10,220 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Bouches -du -Rhône in the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.
Geography
The community is located 22 km south-east of Aix -en- Provence. It is the main town of a canton.
History
The current municipal area has been inhabited since the Neolithic period. In the early history there were so -called oppida here. During Roman times, many villas, favored by the location on the Via Aurelia arise. In the 10th century Benedictine monks acquired a part of the reason. In the middle of the 11th century created two cities: A place formed around the ruler castle on the hills and the present Trets was in the plane. Around the year 1200 a mighty castle was built in Trets. In the early 13th century, the inhabitants of Trets organized community similar and chose their representatives. During this time revolves around the chapel of Saint- Martin de Vidols a new suburb. In the 14th century city wall was built around the place. 1363 was in Trets even briefly a papal university. At this time the city was one of the most important in Provence. In the 16th century the rich city experienced its decline: the castle was abandoned, the suburb disappeared around the Chapel of Saint Martin. On July 29, 1590 came during the Wars of Religion in Trets to a battle between Catholics and Protestants. In the 17th century the city experienced by tanneries and weaving a new bloom.
