Meyreuil

Meyreuil is a commune with 5294 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Bouches -du -Rhône in the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.

Geography

Meyreuil is located in the hills of Montaiguet six kilometers south-east of Aix -en- Provence. Other neighboring towns are Gardanne, Châteauneuf -le- Rouge, Fuveau and Bouc -Bel -Air. The municipality belongs to the community association Communauté d' agglomération du Pays d' Aix.

History

The conquered by the Romans tribes camped on the slopes at Meyreuil. The town's name derives from that of the victorious generals Gaius Marius. After they were defeated, the inhabitants of the town of Aix -en- Provence settled in what is now Meyreuil. In the 14th century, the inhabitants built a castle to protect their village. The Count of Provence was the rule of the Dominicans of Aix -en- Provence on. The nuns spent their holidays here. In conflicts during the French Revolution, the castle was destroyed. The nearby hamlet of Canet de Meyreuil 1902 consisted only of three houses and a store.
