Raimondas Rumšas

Raimondas Rumsas ( born January 14, 1972 in Šilutė ) is a retired Lithuanian professional road racing cyclist.

Cycling career

1994 won Raimondas Rumsas the Course de la Solidarité Olympique, 1996, the Po Ziem tour. In the same year he signed a contract with the Polish Mróz team. In 2000 he moved to Fassa Bortolo.

The greatest success of his career was the third place in the overall standings at the 2002 Tour de France on his only start of the tour, behind the later disqualified Lance Armstrong and Joseba Beloki. In 1999 he won at the Settimana Ciclistica Lombarda and the Bałtyk - Karkonosze Tour. The following year he won the Tour of Lombardy. He became Lithuanian champion in the road race in 2001.

After ending his pro career drove Lithuania " Sportsman of the Year " in 2002 for the Italian small Parkpre team and participated in numerous people for this race, where he became a serial winner. Without a professional team to belong to Rumsas 2005 won the national time trial championship that season and finished in the subsequent road race rank two.

Twice - in 1996 and 2000 - started Rumsas at the Olympic Games.

Doping

Rumsas ' performance in the Tour in 2002 was overshadowed by the arrest of his wife Edita one day after the last stage. Customs inspectors had scoped out performance-enhancing drugs in her car. Following their arrest alleged Edita Rumsas, the doping agent were determined for their seriously ill mother.

All doping tests Raimondas Rumsas even during the 2002 tour, however, were negative, why him the third overall place has not been withdrawn. In the 2003 Giro d'Italia, however, which Rumsas graduated as sixth overall, the Lithuanians positively to taking the blood -enhancing drug erythropoietin ( EPO) has been tested and suspended for one year from Cycling Union UCI. The Lampre team suspended Rumsas then.

In January 2006, the couple received a Rumsas each suspended on probation four month sentence for introduction of illegal doping substances. In addition, Edita Rumsas was fined 3,000 euros. The Polish doctor Krzysztof Ficek, who had cared for during the tour and prescribed the substances Lithuanian cyclist, meanwhile, received a twelve- month sentence on probation.
