Alfons De Wolf

Alfons " Fons " De Wolf ( born June 22, 1956 in Willebroek, Antwerp) is a former Belgian cyclist.

Alfons De Wolf was a professional racing car driver 1979 until 1990., He was regarded as the " new Eddy Merckx " In his home, an expectation that he could not meet, however.

In 1976, De Wolf at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal in part and finished the road race in fourth place. In 1978 he became Belgian champion of the amateurs. In his second year as a pro De Wolf won the Giro di Lombardia and Milan - Sanremo. In 1982 he finished second in Liège- Bastogne- Liège; 1982 and 1983 he won the Omloop Het Volk. At the Tour de France in 1984 he won a stage; at the Vuelta a España get him five stage victories (1979 and 1985).

After 1985 De Wolf no longer reach wins in big races and finally he came back in 1990 from active cycling. Today he works as a funeral director in Breendonk.
