Geography

History

The district of Rügen was created in 1818 as part of the reorganization of the circle outline in the Prussian state after the Congress of Vienna and belonged to the governmental district of Stralsund in Pomerania. This included the mostly rural areas of the island of the same name. The District Office was in Bergen auf Rügen.

Communal Constitution to 1945

The district of Rügen was divided into townships, rural communities and - until their full resolution - into independent estate districts.

With the introduction of the Prussian municipality constitutional law of 15 December 1933, issued January 1, 1934 a uniform municipal constitution for all Prussian municipalities. The former municipalities Bergen auf Rügen, Rügen Garz on now were designated city.

Population Development

Railway and road traffic
