San Giorgio Ionico

San Giorgio Ionico is a southern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 15,480 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in the province of Taranto in Apulia. The municipality is located in the northern Salento, about 10 kilometers east of Taranto.

History

The beginnings of the town lie in pre-Christian times. Settlement remains dating from the 3rd century BC suggest a necropolis. The origin of the present-day village is to be found in the Middle Ages, when fleeing from Taranto sought refuge from the Saracens. First documented However, the place was only in 1522; presumably Albanian settlers were already 100 years ago got here under the impression of Skanderbeg.

Traffic

Through the site, the Strada Statale 7 leads from Taranto to Grottaglie (this is the last section of the Via Appia ) or as Strada Statale 7ter to Manduria. Furthermore, the Strada Statale 603 leads to Francavilla Fontana.
