Crispiano

Crispiano ( in the local dialect Crispien ) is a Southern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 13,646 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in the province of Taranto in Apulia. The municipality is situated approximately 14 kilometers north of Taranto in the midst of several surveys (up to about 400 m above sea level ). Crispiano is part of the Murgia, however, only marginally part of Salento.

History

The original settlement may go back to the Spartan colony of Tarentum. Until the 18th century the place was but meaningless.

Economy and Transport

The area is used for growing olives. The place, therefore, is also called città delle 100 masserie ( city of 100 country houses). Crispiano is connected to the railway network with a station on the non-electrified route Bari Martina Franca, Taranto ( Ferrovie del Sud Est).

Community partnership

Crispiano maintains a partnership with Nea Chalkidona, part of the municipality of Filadelfia Chalkidona in the Regional District of downtown Athens.
