Santa Maria del Camí

Santa Maria del Cami is a municipality in the northwest of the island of Mallorca. It has 6,500 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013), of which 4455 live in the same place. In 2006, the foreigners in the community was 6.7 % ( 356), the proportion of German population 1.6% (84).

History

The origin of the small country town dates back to the Moors. But even before the Arab rule in Roman times this was the way of Palma to the old Pollentia, today's Alcúdia.

Santa Maria was the first rest stop on the way from Palma to the north. The strategic location of this town could have given the city its name. Santa Maria del Cami, that can be translated with " Saint Mary of the path " literally.
