Santanyí

Santanyi is one of 53 independent municipalities on the Balearic Mediterranean island of Mallorca. It lies in the southeast of the island and is bordered to the west by the municipality of Ses Salines, on the north by the municipality of Campos and on the east by the municipality of Felanitx. The municipal area are the Puig Gros ( 271 meters ) and the Pena Bosca (280 meters) as the highest elevations. To the municipality of Santanyi has a coastline of about 35 kilometers. Town Santanyi

Location

The town of Santanyi is located in the extreme southeast of Mallorca. It is the administrative seat of the municipality of Santanyi and 56 kilometers from the capital Palma and well connected by road.

History

Santanyi was first mentioned under the name of Sancti Aini in 1236. King Jaume II named the city in 1300 Santanyi. About the origin of the name, there are several theories. The Most common is believed that the name comes from the Latin Sanctus Agnus ( " Holy Sheep" ) comes from. The sheep appears in the coat of arms of the municipality. Attractions

The church of Sant Andreu is from the 18th century on the Plaça Major. It houses a Baroque organ, originally from the Dominican convent in Palma.
