Segrià

The Comarca Segrià is a ( district ) in the Autonomous Community of Catalonia (Spain). It is the most populous comarca in the province of Lleida. About two-thirds of the population lives in its capital, Lleida. The name of the comarca is derived from the eponymous river Segre.

Location

The community association is located in the western part of Catalonia. It is bordered on the northeast by the comarca of Noguera, in the east on Pla d' Urgell and Garrigues, in the south of Ribera d' Ebre and to the west by the Autonomous Community of Aragon. Together with the Comarcas Garrigues, Noguera, Segarra and Urgell Segrià forms the region 's territory Ponent.

Segrià is located in the far west a fertile plateau, the zentralkatalanischen sink. Only low hills dominate the landscape. The highest elevations are the mountains Punta de Mantmaneu (495 m ) and Punta dels Escambron (500 m). The lower reaches of the river Segre flows through the Comarca from northwest to southeast. The Segre feeds a network of irrigation channels (Canal de Urgell ), which also extends over the adjacent Comarcas.

Climate

The climate is dry with little precipitation, which especially in the spring. The summers are hot and winters are cold with frequent fog.

Economy

An extensive irrigation led to an intensive fruit and vegetable production. An important role is played by grazing (cows, sheep) as well as the pig and poultry breeding.

Of importance is the textile, shoe, paper, fertilizer and food industries. An iron foundry and a farm equipment factory are located here. Trade and services are in the capital of Lleida importance.
