The Stadio Adriatico - Giovanni Cornacchia is a football stadium with an athletics track in the Italian city of Pescara; located in the eponymous province in the Abruzzo region. The nickname was given the Sports Venue 2009; he goes to Giovanni Cornacchia (1939-2008), a track and field athlete from Pescara, back.

History

In addition to the athletics sports venue is mainly used by the football club Pescara Calcio as a home ground. The stadium was inaugurated on December 29, 1955 by Pescara Calcio match against Como Calcio. It is also a center of the National Olympic Committee of Italy ( CONI ). The first construction of the stadium was designed by Luigi Piccinato. It initially had only a grandstand ring around and took about 10,000 spectators.

During the Summer Olympics in 1960 found three games of the football tournament held in Pescara.

In 1977 Pescara Calcio rose to Serie A and the complex was renovated and expanded with a second block of stands to 34,000 places. By 1985 the capacity increased to 40,000 seats. After the disaster at Heysel strict rules were introduced, and the number of seats fell again. The stadium was designed as a replacement venue for the FIFA World Cup 1990. In 2007, turnstiles were installed at the entrances.

It was last renovated by mid-2008 until May 2009 for the 16th Mediterranean Games 2009. In the arena, the opening- closing ceremonies, football, athletics and handisport took place. The conversion would cost tete approximately € 15 million. The grandstand has been covered with a laminated wood construction. The press gallery with 180 seats as well as the air-conditioned VIP grandstand were built. The ground floor was demolished; but had to be rebuilt according to the original plans by Luigi Piccinato. A video system monitors exterior and interior. The natural turf has a turf heating. There are, inter alia, even a bar and a gym. The stadium offers today after reconstruction 24,400 seats ( 5,500 covered).
