The Stadio San Nicola is a multi-functional stadium in the southwest of the Italian city of Bari and home of the local professional football club AS Bari.

The stadium was built for the FIFA World Cup 1990, holds around 58,300 spectators and is named after the patron saint of Bari, Nicholas of Myra, named.

Due to its modern, futuristic appearance, it is ( German " the spaceship ) " also known as " L' astronave ". The main feature of the covered arena is the top rank, which consists of 26 separate parts.

History

The Stadio San Nicola was built between 1987 and 1990 according to a project by the Genovese architect Renzo Piano. It has an athletics track, but it has been so far used only once.

The arena was built to replace the ailing Stadio della Vittoria. A new building was necessary because Bari had been awarded the contract as a venue for the 1990 World Cup.

In the 1990 World Cup five games were held in San Nicola, three group matches in Group B, the second round between Czechoslovakia and Costa Rica as well as the place match between England and hosts Italy.

On 29 May 1991, the final was held in the European Champions Cup between Red Star Belgrade and Marseille held in Bari, which won the Yugoslavs 5-3 on penalties.
