Stanley Clinton Davis, Baron Clinton -Davis, PC ( born December 6, 1928) is a British politician ( Labour Party ). He was from 1985 to 1989 Commissioner in the Delors Commission I.

Life and career

Education and career

Clinton Davis was born the son of Sidney Davis and attended Hackney Downs School, the Mercers ' School and King's College London, where he specialized in Law (Law) graduated 1950. From 1949 to 1950 he was a member of the Executive Council of the National Association of Labour Student Organisations. Clinton -Davis was one of several presidents of the Society of Labour Lawyers. In 1953 he was admitted as a lawyer ( solicitor).

In the general election in 1955, he joined unsuccessfully for the constituency of Portsmouth (Long Stone), and at the general election in 1959 and the House of Commons 1964 election for the electoral district of Yarmouth, also unsuccessful. From 1959 to 1971 he was member of the Council ( Councillor ) of the London Borough of Hackney and 1968-1969 Mayor ( Mayor ). He was Chairman ( Chair ) of the Social Services.

Membership in the House of Commons

Clinton Davis was elected at the 1970 general election for the constituency of Hackney Central in the House of Commons. He had held this seat until 1983, when the constituency was abolished. In the Labour Government from 1974 to 1979 by Prime Minister Harold Wilson and James Callaghan later he was Minister of State ( junior minister) for trade. From 1979 to 1981 he was opposition spokesman on Trade, Prices and Consumer Protection ( Prices and Consumer Protection) and 1981-1983 for Foreign Affairs.

European Commission and European

From 1985 to 1989, Clinton Davis Commissioner in the Commission Delors I. He was responsible for the environment, consumer protection, transport as well as for transportation.

From 1999/2000 to 2001/2002 he was a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and the WEU.

Membership in the House of Lords

Clinton Davis was appointed Life peer as Baron Clinton - Davis of Hackney in the London Borough of Hackney on 8 May 1990. His maiden speech in the House of Lords he held on 14 June 1990. Topics of political interest as he is on the website of the Housde of Lords transport policy, the environment, foreign policy, law, civil liberties and international trade. As states of interest, he cites the Commonwealth States and Europe, as well as Israel, South Africa and the United States.

From 1990 to 1997 he was opposition spokesman on transport. From 1990 to 1996 he was deputy speaker of Trade and Industry ( Supporting Spokesperson for: Trade and Industry ) and from 1990 to 1997 of Foreign Affairs (Foreign Affairs ). Clinton Davis was from 1997 to 1998, Minister of State (Minister of State ) to the Department of Trade and Industry. Since 2009 he is member of the Joint Committee on Statutory Instruments.

He is Vice- President of the Parliamentary Committee Against Antisemitism.

Clinton Davis was present regularly in the period from 2001 when in session.

Other offices and honors

Clinton Davis was from 1989 to 1997 and again from 1998 Consultant (Consultant ) to the priority areas of Europe and the environment at the law firm SJ Berwin & Co. Solicitors. From 1990 to 1997 he was a consultant (Consultant ) of the European Cockpit Association and since 1990 at the Society of Labour Lawyers, where he has been since 1987 Vice-President ( Vice - President). He is also Vice- President of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health.

He is an honorary member ( Honorary Member) of the Executive Council of Justice. Since 1989 he is member of the UN Selection Committee for the UNEP Sasakawa Environment Award, since 1999 he is Chairman ( Chairman ). He was from 1993 to 1997 Member of the Supervisory Board (Executive) of the Institute of Jewish Affairs.

Clinton Davis was from 1989 to 1997 and from 1998 to 2001 Chairman ( Chairman ) of the Advisory Committee on Protection of the Sea and its president since 2001. Until 1996 he was president ( chairman ) of the Packaging Standards Council. Until 1997 he was a member of the Advisory Panel CIS Environ Trust. He was president of the British Multiple Sclerosis Society ( Hackney Branch), President of the UK Pilots Association (Navy), President of the Association of Municipal Authorities, President of the Institute of Travel Management, President of the Aviation Environment Federation. Since 1998 he is President of the British Airline Pilots ' Association ( BALPA ).

Until 1997 he was a member of the Trusteeship Council ( trustee ) of the International Shakespeare Globe Centre. In 2000 he was a member of the Board (Panel). From 1989 to 1996, Clinton -Davis President and 1996-1997 President ( Chair ) of the Refugee Council.

Since 1998 Clinton -Davis is a member of the Privy Council.

Work in the public

In January 1998, Clinton Davis was criticized for allegedly misleading the multilateral agreement on investment.

In March 1998, he announced a restructuring of the British Overseas Trade Board with setting up new working groups.

In Eurosceptic circles Clinton -Davis fell because of its influence and its payment together with other peers who also held high positions in the EU in June 2011 in the criticism.

He criticized the lack of flagging in 2011 of public buildings with the European flag on Europe Day.

Honors and Awards

In 1990 he was honored with the Grand Cross Order of Leopold II for his services to the European Commission. The Polytechnic University of Bucharest awarded him an honorary doctorate. Clinton -Davis is a Fellow of Queen Mary & Westfield College, London, at King's College London and the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management.

Family and Private

Clinton -Davis is married to Frances Jane Lucas, daughter of Marcus Gershon Lucas since 1954. Together they have four children, three daughters and a son. In 1990 he changed his name to Stanley Clinton Clinton - Davis.
