Sustrum

Sustrum is a member municipality of the velvet municipality Lathen in the Emsland district, in Lower Saxony. It was created on 1 January 1973 as part of a regional reorganization of Sustrum, Neusustrum and Sustrum Moor, one of the oldest settlements in the Emsland region.

The municipality has approximately 1.200 inhabitants and covers an area of ​​35.59 square kilometers. The administrative headquarters is located in the town of Lathen.

Geography

Geographical Location

Sustrum lies west of the Ems and extends to the border of the Netherlands. Through the village to the highway A 31 pulls with the junction Lathen.

Neighboring municipalities are in the north, the municipality Walchum in Samtgemeinde Dorpen, in the east the municipality Kluse ( Samtgemeinde Dörpen ) and the community Fresenburg, in the south the municipality Niederlangen and the city of Haren.

District Sustrum

The village Sustrum was first mentioned in the 11th century in the registers of the monastery of Corvey, making it one of the oldest towns in the Emsland region and the surrounding area. Ecclesiastical settlement of the parish stone image was attached, which meant the complicated and dangerous path the ferry across the river Ems for the church visit. Although several ferry disasters have been handed down, it came only after the ferry disaster on March 12, 1920 concrete plans to build a church. District Neusustrum

Neusustrum was founded on August 17, 1788 Moor colony. The bog was part of the brand community Sustrum. Only in 1829 it came to improvements, as east of the settlement yielding surfaces could be purchased and began the cultivation of rye.

District Sustrum -Moor

Sustrum -Moor ranges in the west to the Dutch border and emerged in the 1930s in the context of other bog cultivation. As of 1950, the first residences and a school emerged in the field. In 1959 the church was consecrated in 1969 and the Linksemsische center school was opened in Sustrum -Moor.

History

Documented Sustrum was first mentioned in the 11th century and was in the course of time under the names suhtram (12th century), zutgerum or Zutzerem ( 1358 ) is known. Since 1534 the present name seems to be common.

1933 was opened the aligned for 1000 so-called political prisoners concentration camp Neusustrum protection in the field of Sustrum -Moor as a third of the 15 Emslandlager and used from 1934 as a penal camp of the Reich Ministry of Justice. Among other things found in this camp Ludwig Pappenheim on January 4, 1934 death by firing squad.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms of the municipality is divided in half horizontally. The yellow lower surface and the red upper surface overlap wavy. From the sign foot rises a spike, which is flanked by two cattails. In the right and left lower corner of each is a red three-leafed clover.
