Tom Renney

Tom Renney (* March 1, 1955 in Cranbrook, British Columbia) is a Canadian ice hockey coach. Most recently, he oversaw the Edmonton Oilers of the National Hockey League.

Career

Tom Renney began his coaching career in 1990 when he became the successor to Ken Hitchcock at the Kamloops Blazers in the Canadian Junior Football League WHL. DC in his second year he led the team to win the President's Cup and also won the Memorial Cup. After two years in the juniors to Renney joined the Canadian Hockey Association Hockey Canada and was coach of the Canadian national team, with whom he won the silver medal at the 1994 Winter Olympics.

His first post in the NHL, he received in 1996 when he was appointed coach of the Vancouver Canucks. However, his tenure was marked mainly by failure. The season 1996/97 ended the Canucks out of the playoff ranks and after 19 games the following season the team had only to win four games, so Renney was dismissed.

In 2000 he joined the organization the New York Rangers, where he served as Director of Player Personnel surveyed the work of amateur scouts and delegated and the Pro Scouts assisted. Renney 2002 was promoted to Vice President of Player Development, which he could concentrate more on developing the talent within the organization. For the season 2003/ 04 he took up the post of assistant coach behind Glen Sather, who acted at that time as general manager. Sather put as coach but in the course of the season down in order to concentrate on his duties in the management and Renney became the new head coach of the Rangers.

After failure of the 2004/05 season due to the lockout Renney could go in his first full season as coach of the Rangers 2005/ 06. With experienced players such as Jaromir Jagr, Martin Straka and Michael Nylander and by young talented players like Henrik Lundqvist, the Rangers first playoff participation succeeded after more than nine years. In the two following years they then each reached the second round of the playoffs. On 23 February 2009 Renney was released after a series of defeats from his post as head coach. Up to this time he had become one of the most successful coach of the franchise 's history.

International Renney was also active as an assistant coach of the Canadian national team, including when winning the world title in 2005.
