Train of Thought (English for " train of thought " ) is the seventh studio album by American progressive metal band Dream Theater, which was released in November 2003.

Music style

The band intended, influenced by the heavy metal covers, the Dream Theater played during their previous world tour, take a hard and loud metal album. She played on the tour, among other things, the complete albums Master of Puppets by Metallica and The Number of the Beast by Iron Maiden. Among many fans of Dream Theater Train of Thought is considered the hardest album, which the band had produced up to that point. For this reason, many also speak of the Heavy Metal album of the band.

  • The album was written in just three weeks, making it the fastest -written album of the band:
  • The song " Honor Thy Father" Mike Portnoy wrote about his stepfather. When asked what prompted him to write this song, Portnoy said in an IRC chat that he was not good at writing a love song and wrote therefore a "hate song".
  • There are some obvious connections between Train of Thought and the preceding and following Dream Theater albums: The album has seven songs and it is the seventh studio album by the band. The predecessor, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, has six songs and the successor, Octavarium, has eight.
  • The first song, " As I Am " starts with the same Symphonie-/Orchester-Geräusch that ends the last song of Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence.
  • "This Dying Soul " is a part of Mike Portnoy's " Alcoholics Anonymous series ," says the former from his alcohol addiction and his experience with Alcoholics Anonymous. The series begins with the song " The Glass Prison" by Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, the last song is " The Shattered Fortress " by Black Clouds & Silver Linings.
