Turin–Genoa railway

The railway line Turin -Genoa is an Italian main train route, which is operated by the Rete Ferroviaria Italiana. It connects the cities of Turin and Genoa and is about 169 km long.

History

The railway line was built on the orders of the Government of the Kingdom of Sardinia, which also took over the cost of construction. Construction began on 13 February 1845, was completed on 18 December 1853. The route then had a length of 166 kilometers. For the crossing of the Apennine Mountains of Giovì tunnel with a length of 3259 meters was created. This made ​​for some time the longest tunnel in the world dar.

The Kingdom of Sardinia was relatively late gone into the construction of railways in Europe and decided after lengthy debates, to finance the construction of the important railway line from state funds. The completion of the rail link provided at the national, but also at the international level is a significant event and was followed with great interest by the press.

The entire railway line was laid two tracks already in their construction. For numerous bridges had constructed, removed significant amounts of earth and several tunnels are created. All this caused enormous costs. The railway was not opened on its total length, but on the respective completed sections. The line was electrified in 1910 and 1922 with three-phase alternating current, from 1961 to 1964 it was changed after 3 kV DC.

The railway today

1963 Granarolo tunnel was opened. Thus a direct connection with the Genova Piazza Principe station was established. In 1994 the railway line near Alessandria was devastated by a flood. The river Tanaro was then burst their banks.

Today, the people is guaranteed by the Italian company Trenitalia. On the railway line run alongside regional and express trains also trains the categories Intercity, Intercity Notte and Euro Star.
