Uppsala Reggae Festival
The Uppsala Reggae Festival is the largest reggae festival in Scandinavia. Visitors come from all over Northern Europe. 2004 and 2005 came to Uppsala Reggae Festival 10,000 people.
History
The first Uppsala Reggae Festival took place in summer 2001. Already in the year 1995 was used for a concert with the performer Culture, Beres Bazza, Top Cat and the other the name of " Uppsala Reggae Festival ". However, in 2001, the first concert under the open sky, so this year is regarded as the founding year.
The first festival lasted one day and was held in the open-air swimming - Center of Fyrishov in the center of Uppsala. The most important interpreters were Black Uhuru, Sly and Robbie and Culture. In conjunction with the Uppsala Reggae Festival 2001 Uppsala received from the Swedish television the nickname " The Reggae Mecca of Scandinavia ". At that time the festival was the only one of its kind in all of Scandinavia.
The festival was very well received. In the second year the number of visitors increased by about 70 percent. The event was held again Fyrishov; notable performers were Luciano, Junior Kelly and Red Rat.
Due to the increasing interest, the duration of the festival in 2003 was extended by one day. Also Fyrishov as the venue seemed too small, so you moved the concert to Ekeby Qvarn, a place which is just outside of Uppsala. At the festival itself stalls, food tents and a camping area were. Major performers were gentleman who made his first appearance in Sweden, Barrington Levy, Max Romeo and Misty in Roots. The latter had their first gig in Sweden for over 20 years. The third Uppsala Reggae Festival was awarded by the Swedish radio with the annual Culture Prize.
The fourth Uppsala Reggae Festival, with the support of the local government in Uppsala again, moved back into the city center, between student Erna's IP and Kungsängsbron. During the festival, more booths were represented and there were three different camping areas available; the number of visitors rose again. It was represented by 40 artists, the largest number of artists that has ever occurred in Scandinavia. Among other Iqulah, Bushman, the Mighty Diamonds and Alpha Blondy occurred; Chuck Fenda and Richie Spice had their first gigs in Scandinavia. Through the festival this place has become an official venue for music events in Uppsala.
In the fifth Uppsala Reggae Festival included performances by Anthony B, Capleton, Tanya Stephens and The Gladiators, who had their last tour with the singer and founder Albert Griffiths, on; Cocoa Tea was his only appearance in Europe. Due to public demand gentleman had his second appearance. The record label Xterminator presented numerous artists including Jah Mason and Turbulence. Lutan Fyah and Chezidek had their first gigs in Scandinavia.
In 2006, the duration of the festival was extended to three days. Appearances had, among other things Sizzla, Don Carlos, Groundation, Israel Vibration and The Congos. The following year occurred among other Bunny Wailer, Anthony B and Capleton were represented again and Soldiers Of Jah Army had its first appearance in Northern Europe.
