Västra Götaland County

Västra Götaland County is a province ( län) in the west of Sweden. Västra Götaland County includes the historic landscapes Västergötland, Bohuslän and Dalsland and came into being on 1 January 1998 by the merger of Skaraborg County, Älvsborgs Göteborgs och Bohus Lan and Lan.

With nearly 1,540,000 inhabitants ( 2006) Västra Götaland County is the largest province in terms of population after Stockholm County. 16.9% of the Swedish population live here. The area accounts for 6.4 % of the national territory.

The residence is Gothenburg, other important cities are Vänersborg, Lidköping, Borås, Uddevalla, Trollhattan, Skövde and Mariestad.
