Vaulruz

Vaulruz ( Freiburg Patois VORU? / I ) is a municipality in the canton of Fribourg Greyerzbezirk in Switzerland. The former German name Thalbach is no longer used today.

Geography

Vaulruz is located on 820 m above sea level. M., 5 km west of the district town cop (air line). The former street line village extends on both sides of the stream of Sionge, at the northern edge of the Alps on the broad saddle between the slopes of Mont Marly and the pre-alpine forest height of Les Alpettes north of Moléson.

The area of ​​10.1 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the southern higher Freiburg Central Plateau and the adjacent foothills. The central part of the area occupied by the wide depression in the Sionge and its southern side of Bach Dixon. Is the plateau of Les Ponts (up to 860 m above sea level. M. ) between the two parallel streams. From the municipality surface 1997 8 % were settlements, 26 % of forest and shrubs, 65 % to agriculture and slightly less than 1% was unproductive land.

To Vaulruz include the hamlet of Les Ponts- d'Avau ( 852 m above sea level. M. ) and Les Ponts- d'Amont ( 867 m above sea level. M. ) on the plateau between Sionge and Dixon, one of the houses of La Sionge ( 835 m above sea level. M. ) in the Talniederung the same creek as well as numerous individual farms. Neighboring communities of Vaulruz are Sâles, Riaz, Bulle, Gruyeres and Semsales.

Population

With 994 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Vaulruz one of the smaller municipalities in the canton of Fribourg. Of the 96.3 % inhabitants are French-speaking, German-speaking 2.4 % and 0.8 % portugiesischsprachig (as of 2000). The population of Vaulruz amounted in 1900 to 721 inhabitants. According to a population increase to 1930 (813 inhabitants) followed by 1970, a decrease of 647 inhabitants. Since then, a significant increase in population was recorded again.

Economy

Vaulruz was until the second half of the 20th century, mainly coined by farming village. Even today, animal husbandry and dairying, and to a lesser extent agriculture an important role in the economic structure of the population. More jobs are in small local manufacturing and services available. Its proximity to the A12 motorway in the 1990s was a small commercial zone. Vaulruz is the site of the operation center of the A12 motorway. In recent decades, the village has developed into a residential community. Many employed persons are therefore commuters who work in the regions Bull, Freiburg and Vevey -Montreux.

Traffic

The community is a very good transport developed. It lies on the main road from Bulle to Vevey, west of the village branch of the roads to Romont and Oron- la -Ville. The nearest links to the A12, which is open since 1981 from Bern to Vevey and throughout the municipal area traversed, is located about 1.5 km from the center.

On 1 July 1868, the railway line from Romont was inaugurated by bull with a railway station in Vaulruz. The narrow gauge railway line from Bulle to Châtel -Saint -Denis, which has two stops in the municipality, was put into operation on 23 July 1903.

History

The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1115 under the name Valle Rodulphi. 1359 appeared the former German place name millstone pit, a translation of Molaris de Vaulruz, derived from the Latin word molaris ( millstone ). Later, the German name was changed in Thal Bach.

In Vaulruz the Lords of Blonay founded a castle, which came in the middle of the 13th century under the sovereignty of the House of Savoy and was greatly expanded in the 12th century. In the early 14th century the Savoy founded southwest of the castle, the fortified settlement Vaulruz, already in 1321 with the city charter. But soon began the decline of the town with the first Pestzug in 1350 and a fire in the village in 1387. Then sold the Savoy Vaulruz Family Champion, originally came from Saint -Michel- de -Maurienne. Attractions

The Vaulruz castle stands on a ridge above the valley of the Sionge. It comes with its almost square ground plan originally from the 13th century. One of the oldest parts of one of the massive square tower in the northeast corner, probably the former donjon. The residential buildings along the south wall are newer and were built in the 16th century. The first church of Sainte -Marguerite was built in the early 14th century; the present building dates from 1819.
