Parish Church Saint -Léger

Vendlincourt is a municipality in the district of Porrentruy in the canton of Jura in Switzerland. The former German name Wendlinsdorf is no longer used today.

Geography

Vendlincourt is located on 448 m above sea level. M., 7 km north-east of the district municipal seat Porrentruy (air line). The scattered village extends into a recess in the headwaters of the creek Vendline, in Ajoie ( German Elsgau ).

The area of ​​9.1 km ² large municipality area includes the Talniederung in the headwaters of the Vendline. In the west the area is enough to gently undulating, open the Tabular Jura plateau Ajoie between the Coeuvatte and Vendline. To the east the area extends in the vast forests of Le Chêtre. Population

With 546 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Vendlincourt belongs to the medium-sized municipalities in the canton of Jura. Of the 91.7 % inhabitants are French-speaking, German-speaking 4.5 % and 1.6 % Italian-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Vendlincourt amounted in 1850 to 644 inhabitants, 1900 to 794 inhabitants. Thereafter, a significant decrease was recorded to 554 people by 1980. Since then, there have been only minor fluctuations.

Economy

Vendlincourt is a dominantly agricultural village thanks to the fertile lands in the area. A large sawmill offers numerous jobs. Furthermore, a company for the manufacture of watch cases is left of the major in the 19th century watchmaking. However, many of the working population commuters and work in the region Porrentruy.

Traffic

The municipality is situated on the main road that runs from Porrentruy to Bonfol and on to Seppois -le-Haut in France. On 14 July 1901, the railway line Porrentruy - Bonfol the Chemins de fer du Jura opened with a station in Vendlincourt.

History

His first mentioned in 1136 as the village Wandeleincurt. 1139 the monastery of Saint- Ursanne was confirmed land in Wandelencurt, and later the names Wandelencurtl appear (1230 ) and Wendel village ( 1266 ). The place name probably goes back to the homestead of a Germanic name Wandalin.

Vendlincourt told the eventful history of the Ajoie who first came to the Prince-Bishopric of Basel in 1271. From the 16th to the 18th century, the village was under the Office Meier Coeuve. Between 1793 and 1815 Vendlincourt belonged to France and was initially part of the département du Mont- Terrible, associated from 1800 with the Department of Haut -Rhin. By the decision of the Congress of Vienna, the place came in 1815 to the canton of Bern and on 1 January 1979 at the newly founded Canton Jura. 1832 Vendlincourt was occupied by troops during three days of the Canton of Bern, because the church stood on the side of the clergy who refused to swear allegiance to the liberal constitution.

Attractions

The parish church of Saint -Léger was built in 1817 with the inclusion of an older tower; 1985-86 there was a comprehensive renovation. Before the construction of this church Vendlincourt belonged to the parish Damphreux to 1619, then to 1816 the parish Bonfol. In the center some characteristic farmhouses from the 18th and 19th centuries have been preserved.
