Vertigo-Tour

The Vertigo tour the Irish band U2 accompanied the 11th studio album by U2, How to Dismantle to Atomic Bomb ( 2004). It began on 28 March 2005 in San Diego, California and ended on December 9, 2006 in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The tour is divided into four tour sections, called Legs. All concerts were sold out. The tour lasted about one and a half years, but with a very long pause.

  • 4.1 Leg 1: North America
  • 4.2 Leg 2: Europe
  • 4.3 Leg 3: North America 2
  • 4.4 Leg 4: Rest of the world
  • 4.5 Leg 5: Rest of the World 2

The stage

The stage was designed by Willie Williams, who has also worked on previous U2 shows.

Indoor stage

Main element of the stage is a catwalk, which protrudes in the form of an ellipse in the auditorium. Within this ellipse can accommodate up to 300 people. In the main stage itself there are seven LED screens that can be rolled up during the show. On the LED screens run several animations at the show. The bottom of the stage and of the ellipse are also lamps which are mounted in a circular shape. Above the stage there are four screens, each showing a band member in close-up.

Outdoor stage

In the outdoor shows the screens are replaced by a gigantic LED wall that stands behind the band, similar to the stage structure of the Popmart tour. The speakers in the "Vertigo colors " black and red striped located on both sides of the LED screen. Above the speaker towers each have a LED display that shows two band members in close-up. When the stage is the ellipse by two unconnected catwalks each a small, round B-stage is at the end, been replaced. These B Stages also protrude into the auditorium.

The show and setlist

The most striking at the Vertigo tour are probably the most variable setlists as well last occurred in the Lovetown Tour. The indoor concerts, especially in the first leg of the tour, came up to three different opener for use (City of Blinding Lights, Love and Peace or Else, and vertigo). But even so, the setlists are very different, almost an identical setlist in the first leg of the tour. In addition to the different openers fall, the different Closer to ( Vertigo, bathroom, With or Without You, Love Is Blindness, All I Want Is You, Instant Karma! ( John Lennon Cover) and the classic 40, wherein Adam and The Edge exchange their instruments). In addition to the variability of the rarity of some songs that stands out: U2 play many songs that have years / decades no longer not even played or (Miss Sarajevo), especially the songs from their debut album Boy. These rarities include An Cat Dubh other / Into the Heart and The Ocean (the latter was last played in 1982 ). These and other rarities were mainly played in the opening leg of the tour. The set lists for the European outdoor shows ( Leg 2) saw because of rather inflexible. In addition, each European concert with Vertigo was started and stopped (except Dublin III, III Amsterdam and Lisbon). This was a kind of homage to their first concerts in which they have also often played a song in a show, because they have not had so much to choose from and the show would otherwise have been too short. The first encore usually consists of a short ZooTV setlist, starting with Zoo Station, followed by The Fly and Mysterious Ways. In addition to Zoo station and the song Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses found after twelve years of absence made his return to the setlist. The indoor concerts in the fall of 2005 differed to those in the spring mainly by the strongly varying additions that were played mostly acoustically. In the outdoor concerts in South America in the spring of 2006 also marked differences in the setlists showed. At the concerts of the last legs, the band played increasingly songs from the albums Rattle and Hum and All That You Can not Leave Behind. Up to the present state of the tour were from How to Dismantle to Atomic Bomb album all the songs except for two (A Man and a Woman and One Step Closer ) played live, even the Fast Cars that as a bonus track on some editions of the album was present.

The Vertigo tour is the first tour since Rattle and Hum, in which at least one song each from all U2 albums have been played.

DVD

U2 Live from Chicago - Even during the ongoing tour, the tour DVD Vertigo was released in 2005. Here are two of four performances in Chicago ( 9 and 10 May 2005) were filmed.

In addition to the show already published more shows have been filmed, including the second Dublin show (June 25 ) and the two Milan shows ( July 20 and 21 ). During the fourth section, the two shows in Buenos Aires were with 3D IMAX cameras for a possible theater release, filmed on 1 and 2 March 2006.

10 tracks from the Milan shows have now been released on the bonus DVD of the best-of U218 Singles.
