Verzasca River

The Verzasca in Sonogno

The Verzasca is a wild river valley of the same Valle Verzasca, in the Swiss canton of Ticino. The name refers to the coloration of the water back (" verde acqua " - green water).

It rises at 2'864 m high Pizzo Barone and flows first through the semicircular Val Vegorness. The first settlement on the river is Sonogno (918 m above sea level. M. ), where the Val Redorta opens. Then the river flows south through a valley with Mediterranean vegetation, vineyards, but also rugged, steep mountain slopes, at Brione opens the Osura in the Verzasca. Towards the end of the valley is a alpine sparseness. The bridge Ponte dei Salti in features double Lavertezzo is a known postcard. Around the bridge much is bathed in summer, the erosion in the rocks arise partly natural bathtubs. At the same time it is also very dangerous; now run local "watchdog " along the river and warn or indicate where it is relatively safe.

The Verzasca is also among paddlers and - at low water - popular with divers. There are two well-known Tauchpätze where very challenging drift diving can be practiced. One site is the pelvis below the Ponte dei Salti in Lavertezzo and the other is the so-called Amslerbecken slightly above Corippo. In addition to these two dive sites there are to some lesser-known ways to dive in the Verzasca.

The last few kilometers of the valley are significantly influenced by the Lago di Vorgorno, a dam with a 220 -meter-high dam, the opposite of Magadinoebene seal off the valley and was known by the bungee jump of James Bond in the movie GoldenEye. In Tenero (210 m above sea level. M. ) opens the Verzasca in Lake Maggiore.

The reservoir lies a sunken village, which can be seen at low water.
