Winsum

( Listen? / I ) winsum is a municipality in the Netherlands, Groningen province. She had on 1 January 2013 with a population of 13,906. Their total area is 105.9 km ².

Places

In the town are many small villages and towns. The most important are: Winsum - Obergum, which has almost 8,000 inhabitants and in which the municipality is located, Ezinge, Sauwerd, Baflo and Wierum. Most of these often ancient towns have one on a " Wierde " ( mound ) located nucleus with a medieval church.

History

The first Official certification by April 24, 1057 at the presentation of the market, coin and customs rights by the German King Henry IV is now the official founding date of the municipality Winsum. During excavations in the church however, they found items that were dated to 600 BC, as well as numerous items from the Roman period, which suggests long before 1057 a settlement of the region.

Their coat of arms was awarded the municipality Winsum on 21 May 1889 by King Willem III.

Location and economic

The municipality is located a few kilometers north of the city of Groningen. Sauwerd, Winsum and Baflo have small stations on local railways.

Agriculture is the most important source of income. Tourism (water ) is becoming increasingly important.

Attractions

Most often ancient towns have a on a " Wierde " ( mound ) located nucleus with a medieval church. These churches are often open in the summer to visit or organ concert.

The mound of Ezinge, the BC was already at 300, and where at that time were built of branches and clay rectangular huts, has been studied thoroughly in the 1930s by archaeologists. Such objects were discovered, which had been introduced from the Roman Empire (now in the Groninger Museum in the city of Groningen ). In the place there exists a small museum.

The mound of Sauwerd was inhabited around 400 BC. In the church to Sauwerd the military architect Henrik Ruse, Baron of Rusenstein and his wife are buried.

The quaint little streams that flow through the town, can be traveled by tourists in canoe.
