Already on July 4, 279 caregivers were also named to accompany the German contingent to London. Chef de Mission is Michael Vesper.

The German contingent of 392 athletes was the smallest since reunification, which was due mainly to the small number of qualified team sports. The competitions in football, handball and basketball were held without German participation, so that competed in 23 of the 26 sports athletes. At the opening ceremony hockey player Natascha Keller carried the German flag and led the field of German athletes; the standard-bearer in the Abschlusszermonie was the batsman of the victorious Germany rowing eight, Kristof Wilke, chosen.

In tennis, Andrea Petkovic due to an injury had to cancel their participation, it moved for the item Mona Barthel and for the double Anna -Lena Grönefeld after. Philipp Kohlschreiber Also said in the short term from its participation. Philipp Petzschner, who was originally intended only for the doubles and mixed doubles, replaced the injured Croat Ivo Karlović. At this time, no more single player could be re-nominated, Petzschner was declared the best-placed double player. The horse Monte Bellini of jumping rider Philipp Weishaupt was a week before the Olympic Games from illness. For Weishaupt Meredith Michaels- Beerbaum moved according to the team. Shortly before the Games had relay runners Niklas Zender injury to cancel his participation, for him drew Benjamin Jonas after. For the injured Rhythmic gymnast Regina Sergeeva Judith Hauser was re-nominated. Controversial was the nomination of the duo Kathrin Kadelbach and Friederike Belcher in sailing, narrowly prevailed in the team 's internal qualification against Susann Beucke and Tina Lutz. The dominated Duo complained a court to be also of the German Sailing Association ( DSV) proposed for nomination, so that the final decision would have been the DOSB. The request was rejected. Reason for the action was an alleged deprivation at the final qualifying regatta, the World Championships in Perth. Since Kadelbach and Belcher led in the national championship, they did not sail on placement, but tried to prevent a good placement of their adversaries. The fact that this race tactics allowed the World Cup regatta of the ISAF was not decided until a few days before, which was the duo Kadelbach and Belcher, but not their adversaries known.

Target agreements

Shortly before the end of the games target agreements had become known that the DOSB had closed in 2008 with the professional organizations. This one went from 2012 of 86 medals, including 28 gold medals. Some of these requirements as in swimming with a instead of eight or shooting with no place five medals were clearly missed. Further medals were included, although neither had the Ladies yet qualified the men's team for the games, for example in handball. Publication of the figures was only after two journalists with a lawsuit, which they wanted to achieve the release in court were right. DOSB President Thomas Bach described the debate as a misunderstanding of a wrong choice of words. It should never have gone to target agreements but funding agreements. All participants had consequently been aware that any medals contained in the agreement could not be obtained and there was " no intention to attack China in the medals table ."

Public, media and politics attended the agreements largely illusory on what caused a general debate on the promotion of sport in Germany. This was initiated before the games of the fencer Imke Duplitzer and in the further course of the Matches for various other athletes who, like the Olympic champion Robert Harting and Sebastian Brendel saw far below promotes in Germany, was added. At the end of the German athletes won a greater number of medals than four years ago in Beijing, but where more gold medals were won.
