17th Goya Awards
The award of the Spanish Goya Film Awards took place for the 17th time on February 1 2003. With eight nominations Fernando León de Aranoas Monday won in the sun in five of the 28 categories. The excellent example as best movie drama that had previously received four awards at the San Sebastian International Film Festival in the year, tells of unemployed shipyard workers. León de Aranoa had already won the Goya for Barrio and Familia. Further nominations for Best Movie went to Pedro Almodóvar for Talk to Her, Emilio Martínez Lázaro for Bedside Stories and Antonio Hernández for the afterlife of memory. The film by Almodovar, who was already award-winning international awards for his previous works and received for Talk to her two nominations at the Academy Awards in 2003, is about a nurse who is in love with a comatose ballet dancer. Almodóvar's entry was awarded the prize for the best film music with a Goya with seven nominations only.
Javier Bardem won for his portrayal of Santa in Mondays in the Sun for Best Actor, Mercedes Sampietro won for Places of comunes in the category of Best Actress. In the Supporting Actor categories were able to prevail in the afterlife of memory, Luis Tosar in Mondays in the Sun and the US-American Geraldine Chaplin. Roman Polanski's World War II drama The Pianist was awarded as Best European film. Diego El ultimo tren Arsuagas tragicomedy - The last train that tells the locomotive kidnapping a group of older Uruguayans ( among others played by Héctor Alterio ), won in the category Best Foreign Film in Spanish. The Honorary Goya went to the Spanish actor Manuel Alexandre, who has worked since the 1940s in the Spanish film and was known among other things, the Oscar -nominated Placido.
